Everything moves irresistibly towards Him. From the left background the diagonal line of Pharisees leads towards Christ, while from the other side a stream of figures surges relentlessly towards the man whom they faithfully believe will cure their afflictions. In the left foreground a large figure stands with his back to us; though he has no specific role in the story, he plays an important part in starting the movement towards Christ from the left. Within this framework there is a suggestion of a circular movement leading from Christ to the kneeling beggar on his left, the sick woman immediately below, the dog, the running child and the seated young man on the left joining in the figure of Christ, and enclosing that superb figure of the mother walking up to Christ with her baby in her arms.
